a road trip to paradise
itinerary:
athens
nafplio
monemvasia
elafoniso island
one of our favorite road trips in greece would be from athens to elafonisos. it is actually not very far from athens and you could drive to elafonisos in one day, but there is something about those short drives and the beautiful and different places on the way that makes us want to make a road trip out of it every time.
this is a road trip with the perfect combination of big city life, unique small towns and a beautiful island with crystal clear water.
let's start off with athens. after some days in the beautiful capital, rent a car and drive to the first destination nafplio - a small city that was actually the first capital of greece. if you want to you can take a pit stop on the way and take a look at the corinth canal.
We would spend one or two days in nafplio, depending on your schedule. it's a beautiful small city with a lot of nice architecture, cool shops, restaurants and bars. and you will even find some decent beaches. arvanitia beach is the main one.
the next stop on this road trip is monemvasia. from nafplio to monemvasia you can make a pit stop in sparta if you are interested in greek history or just love the movie 300. not our cup of tea though. you will drive through the city anyways and can easily check it off your list.
monemvasia is a small unique town with no cars. the average price to stay here is quite high but it’s totally worth it. if you don’t want to spend the night here, you can visit/pit stop on the way, and maybe find a cheaper place to stay right outside the town. either way, you really should experience monemvasia.
final destination is elafonisos (do not get confused with the beach on crete with the same name). take the pounta ferry to elafonisos. it goes from 7 am to 00 am every 30 min. the ferry takes only 8 min. 1€ for an adult and 11€ for a vehicle.
elafoniso is a very small island with one of the most beautiful beaches we have ever seen. and as beach hunters- we know what we're talking about.
